Our pediatric specialties and orthotic solutions allow for care of children with a wide variety of presentations.

We work closely with families, therapists and doctors to best address your child’s needs while providing reassurance and an abundance of patience. Our goal is to enrich children’s lives and allow them to strive for their greatest functional potential as they grow and develop.

“A great experience with Strive Orthotics!”

We had a great experience with Strive Orthotics getting my daughter fitted for her SMO braces. Melissa was great and works very well with kids. She came out to my daughters physical therapy appointments to evaluate and fit and apply her braces when they arrived. This helped eliminate what could have been a stressful situation for my daughter. I could not recommend enough. Thank you Melissa!

Neuromuscular Basics

Neuromuscular disorder is a general term that applies to a wide array of different conditions that affects the central nervous system, brain and spinal cord, muscles and nerves. The two most common neuromuscular conditions affecting pediatric patients are Cerebral Palsy (CP), affecting 3 in 1000 live births and a group of disorders known as Muscular Dystrophy.

Cerebral Palsy

Cerebral Palsy (CP) is a neurological disorder caused by a deformation during brain growth and development or a non-progressive brain injury. It is characterized by impairment or loss of motor function. Cerebral palsy can occur before, during, or immediately after birth, and the majority of children affected by cerebral palsy are born with it.

Children with cerebral palsy will likely show signs of physical or motor impairment. The type, location, and areas affected will vary. Symptoms can include loss of muscle, twitching, shaking, walking on toes, gait complications and much more.

Cerebral palsy is a long-term disorder with no cure, but it also never gets worse. Treatment with orthoses can greatly improve mobility and function in children with CP.

Muscular Dystrophy

Muscular dystrophy is a general term for a large group of over 30 disorders that affect the spinal and skeletal muscles. Some examples are:

  • Congenital Muscular Dystrophy (CMD)
  • Becker Muscular Dystrophy (BMD)
  • Facioscapulohumeral Muscular Dystrophy (FSHD)
  • Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD)
  • Limb Girdle Muscular Dystrophy (LGMD)
  • Myotonic Muscular Dystrophy (DM)

Neuromuscular Treatment Solutions

Every child’s condition varies in severity and goals for treatment. Your orthotist will talk with you about specific goals such as enhanced mobility, support for bone and spinal structures, and we’ll work with your physician and therapist as part of your allied healthcare team to achieve the best possible outcome.

Lower Limb Orthoses

A wide range of rigid and semi-rigid orthoses that vary from shoe inserts, Ankle Foot Orthotics (AFO), Knee Ankle Foot Orthotics (KAFO) to Hip Knee Ankle Foot Orthotics (HKAFO)

AFO – Ankle Foot Orthotics are an excellent way to improve ankle movement, foot alignment and gait correction. Often used for Drop Foot, AFOs can also be used for additional ankle and foot stability when ligaments and foot misalignment contribute to instability.

KAFO – Knee Ankle Foot Orthotics are long-leg orthotics that support the knee and ankle to stabilize the joints and assist the muscles of the leg.

HKAFO – Hip Knee Ankle Foot Orthotics are the same as a KAFO but with an extension of hip and pelvic components that provide more stability to the hip and lower torso. HKAFOs provide pelvic stability and help to align the hip and lower leg beneath.

Spinal Orthoses

TLSO – Thoracolumbosacral Orthoses are rigid braces used to correct the lateral (sideways) curve of the spine. TLSOs can help improve stability and balance as well as improve control of the extremities, neck, head and torso. TLSOs come in many shapes, colors and styles.
